Scattering by Black Holes

چکیده

Black holes, objects so compact that not even light can escape their gravitational pull, are among the most intriguing concepts of modern science. As Kip Thorne wrote in 1974: “Of all the conceptions of the human mind from unicorns to gargoyles to the hydrogen bomb perhaps the most fantastic is the black hole: a hole in space with a definite edge over which anything can fall and nothing can escape; a hole that curves space and warps time.” Evidence that these exotic objects exist in our universe has been mounting since the discovery of the archetypal black hole Cygnus X1 in 1971. Today, the presence of supramassive black holes (several million times as massive as our sun) at the centre of many galaxies, and smaller black holes (5-10 times as massive as the sun) in X-ray binary systems, is generally accepted. From the mathematical point of view, a black hole is a spacetime defined by a four-dimensional metric tensor, that is, a solution of Einstein’s equations, with characteristic properties. The simplest black hole is spherically symmetric and non-rotating. It is known as the Schwarzschild black hole, and is described by the metric tensor gab which is given by

Quantum-mechanical scattering of charged black holes.

We describe the quantum mechanical scattering of slowly moving maximally charged black holes. Our technique is to develop a canonical quantization procedure on the parameter space of possible static classical solutions. With this, we compute the capture cross sections for the scattering of two black holes. Finally, we discuss how quantization on this parameter space relates to quantization of t...

Dynamics of extremal black holes.

Particle scattering and radiation by a magnetically charged, dilatonic black hole is investigated near the extremal limit at which the mass is a constant times the charge. Near this limit a neighborhood of the horizon of the black hole is closely approximated by a trivial product of a two-dimensional black hole with a sphere. This is shown to imply that the scattering of long-wavelength particl...

Chaotic scattering around black holes

It is shown that the scattering of a charged test particle by a system of four extreme Reissner-Nordtröm black holes is chaotic in some cases. The fractal structure of the scattering angle and time delay functions is another manifestation of the existence of a nonattracting chaotic set: fractal basin boundaries were previously known. 04.25.-g,04.40.Nr,04.70.Bw,95.10.Fh Typeset using REVTEX 1

Virtual Black Holes and the S-matrix

A brief review on virtual black holes is presented, with special emphasis on phe-nomenologically relevant issues like their influence on scattering or on the specific heat of (real) black holes. Regarding theoretical topics results important for (avoidance of) information loss are summarized.

Fermion scattering off dilatonic black holes.

The scattering of massless fermions off magnetically charged dilatonic black holes is reconsidered and a violation of unitarity is found. Even for a single species of fermion it is possible for a particle to disappear into the black hole with its information content. In recent years there has been a lot of interest in the physics of black holes. The issue which has engaged the attention of most...

Planckian Energy Scattering , Colliding Plane Gravitational Waves and Black Hole Creation

In a series of papers Amati, Ciafaloni and Veneziano and 't Hooft conjectured that black holes occur in the collision of two light particles at planckian energies. In this paper we discuss a possible scenario for such a process by using the Chandrasekhar-Ferrari-Xanthopoulos duality between the Kerr black hole solution and colliding plane gravitational waves. We clarify issues arising in the de...
